Obstetric fistula is one of the most devastating medical conditions a woman can endure—and one of the least discussed. Caused by prolonged, obstructed labor without medical intervention, fistula results in a hole between the birth canal and the bladder or rectum. The outcome? Constant, uncontrollable leaking of urine or feces through the vagina.
Yes, it’s gross. Worse, it’s painful. It’s humiliating. And because of the leaking and odor, many women with fistula are abandoned, outcast, or forced into complete isolation. They stop showing up to community gatherings. They stop working. Many stop hoping. This is a condition that robs people of their dignity—and then silences them with shame.
And because it involves leaking and odor, many women with fistula are abandoned by their partners, ostracized by their communities, or forced into lifelong seclusion. They are often young. They are almost always poor. And in nearly every case, they lacked access to adequate medical care when they gave birth.
