I agree. And I don't just see naturists banning mainstream social media, a lot of textile millennials are starting to leave mainstream social media too. I am 36, so part of the first gen on facebook (when it was only available to college students), over the years, I've seen more and more of my friends delete their Facebook, twitters, Instagram, etc, As it is all filled with junk, and seen as a waste of time. People stay in touch through text. I understand naturists needing social media to advertise and to get "the word out". But I soon, see "that" going away as more people (especially college educated, with disposable income - a main target market) move away from social media altogether.
“In an ideal (albeit unlikely) scenario, nudists could help guide social media companies toward creating policies that are nuanced and better able to distinguish between different types of content, and collaborate in Twitter's content moderation efforts to ensure transparency.” This is an excellent idea!!
I hope more naturists online will migrate/create accounts on Mastodon as I am one who has abandoned all other social media and more and more people are moving to the fediverse.
I understand the inclination but for me, retreating to more niche spaces online is not a winning formula for naturists looking to improve our representation online. To me it’s akin to hiding away complacently in the comfort of a nudist club and ignoring the stripping away of public beaches and other clothing optional spaces. I think we need to be vocal and fight to assert our rights even when the odds are against us.
The fediverse is not "retreating to more niche spaces". It's the future of online discourse, because it's a much better model than the centrally-controlled youtwitfacetogram. At least, here's hoping...
I don’t disagree with that at all. I’m certainly not saying nudists shouldn’t join mastodon. There is just a defeatist undercurrent to the idea of abandoning mainstream social media where the rest of the world is just because they’re banning nudists. I think it’s worth trying to speak up against the problem.
Isn't denying that power to those in power a way of speaking up? I feel like the mainstream social media gives naturists no power to say anything. The only people that get to say anything against them are those that have enough money to pay them off.
I don’t believe there are enough naturists to deny twitter the power it has. Naturists vacating twitter won’t move the needle there, it will only remove us from the conversation
I think the answer is obvious. Maintain a vocal presence on all existing platforms which should now include Mastodon. It will be much more difficult to diminish the voices of family naturists when Mastodon remains a viable option.
I'm surprised that twitter has a zero tolerance policy as "rape" and "rough sex" is being tweeted and retweeted 1.9M times.
I'm a somewhat disappointed with the way in which the twitter "owner" is going about this. He's rich. I think he should fund someone like Professor Keon West to conduct research to corroborate his theories and have a second study to replicate the same. It's insulting, degrading and dangerous. It's scary to draw a link between naturism and child molestation or sexual exploitation without any form of evidence. Get the data and analyse the findings in order to deal with the REAL issues instead of going on a widespread witch hunt. Money DOESN'T buy everything. At least it DOESN'T buy intelligence. "If there's harm. Let's detect it and let's quantify it." But we shouldn't go around with these dangerous forms of stigmatisation.
I enjoyed Stephane Deschanes' conversation with Keon West. Thanks for spreading the word. I think, though, that Elon Musk isn't rational and/or doesn't have everybody's best interests at heart.
Since I was a kid, I've thought that nudism is corrective for our wrong-headed body repression. I don't like it that somebody can deny a novel moral idea access to the media of the moment, especially at a time when we are choosing our futures vis a vis seemingly instantaneous worldwide communication, the environment, exponentially growing technology, and—of course—who we are sexually. The Protestant Reformation happened because of the invention of moveable type.
I have been saying for quite some time now that the reason naturist accounts get banned is for featuring children if they are unclothed or even clothed if they are in the presence of unclothed adults. Just the mention of family or children in a non-media naturist related post could be enough justification for a ban. We are living in perilous times regarding free speech. Social media publishers are overreacting in caution to overreaching, or the threat of such, laws ostensibly for the fight against child exploitation. There are new threats from conservative politicians to repeal Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. This Act indemnifies social media publishers of the responsibility for user content.
Our rights to free speech are being assaulted in other ways too as with the fight against "wokeism", whatever that is. These assaults are not about protecting people or fighting cultural misappropriation. It is about control. Government control over what you can see, publish and eventually think. The battle is much larger than just the assault on naturism.
I replied to another comment, so I'll be brief here. As a naturist, I, of course, understand the frustration in how we are depicted and seen by the textile world and want to push the cause and the message of what family naturism i.s all about. But, with that said, I find less and less people, who would be the ideal target market for Naturism (the health and wellness benefits (both physical and mental), the resorts, etc) are using social media. Or are deleting their accounts across all platforms all together. So, there should be a different way to reach this crowd. And I say word of mouth, news articles, blogs like this one, the resorts having a strong informational website, and doing what Bare Oaks is doing with a podcast. No need for social media.
Don’t get me started! This was one of the catalysts that drove me to leave “Naturist Twitter”. While I was sad to leave some great voices behind, it was a good move for me. I’m on Tumblr now. While it has its own problems, it seems less volatile, less angry, less weird sometimes?? Plus….no character limits, and you can edit after you post! Eureka!
Im hopeful the Naturist Tumblr community will grow. Im trying to share good content such as this. Yes, there will always be a slew of new pictures of nude models butts. It is what it is. But it’s not too hard to coexist.

Destruction of democracy and hate is not part of the zero tolerance policy, of course...
