I think it does, it has to modernize and adept to today's fast paced, modern day young person. Today's modern day young person is almost always on their phone, on tiktok or other social media platform. Nudism/naturism has to utilize those online social media in order to appeal to the modern day, young person to recruit them and invite them to at least take a look at this fun and exciting lifestyle and survive.
"modern day young person" is but one of many groups we want to reach. We need to use language and symbology which is understandable to as many as possible. Likes on facebook does not equal a desire or ability to invest time and or money in a hobby / way of life.
In order for that to be possible, however, facebook and other social medias would be required to allow nudity to be displayed. Unfortunately this would be impossible, since the mainstream society in this country would automatically associate that with sexuality and something inappropriate and illegal especially if it depicts child nudity. This means that mainstream society as a whole would have to be more understanding and lenient towards the pictures of the naked human body in general. This means that another sexual revolution would have to take place, where social norms regarding the depictions of nudity would have to be altered or erased altogether. I could go on and on, but I think you have the idea of what i'm trying to say.
Whatever we call it, I think if someone is going to be put off by the name they’re probably not really interested. The descriptive words nudism and naturism have come about organically to give natural expression to what we do - trying to manufacture a replacement is inviting argument.
There needs to be more places where naturist can gather even if it’s clothing optional then show up en mass so more people are comfortable being naked. I know I would feel uncomfortable in a clothing optional and the only one naked
yes it does...I like the idea of "whole body movement", akin to ayurvedic and holistic health movement, also earthing and all forms of treating ourselves as a living integral part of nature...not separate from nature.
I am always asked can we have sex! The past leaders have been to afraid to promote nudism. I feel instead of making it a household word and let people get comfortable with it our leaders have been tip toeing around it. I am beginning to feel people think it is a bad thing. Being a nudist for years I never felt better than when I am nude and spend my day with other nudist out in nature. So my answer is to get it out in every day life.
I answered 'maybe' but I don't think the problem is 'branding' in terms of a single word descriptor. I describe myself as a nudist because presenting oneself naked to other persons was the most freeing step I could imagine taking when I was twelve having encountered it as an ideology. A bit later, when I wanted to put the ideology into practice, the resistance from everyone around me was crushing. My mother was horrified. Boys my age tittered pruriently but all sorts of weird references to scout masters and such was given as an excuse to avoid practical experimentation. Girls had some interest in covert investigation but definitely not in any public way. Since I didn't know any actual nudists back then it would be some time before I actually found my 'tribe'. I totally failed to educate my own family, despite giving them ample access to experience. What I found was that social conditioning overcame my earnest attempts, despite none of them having any reservations with nudity per se. Nudism/Naturism as a 'brand' is tarred with the brush of societal prejudice made all the more toxic by evangelical puritans and their like pointing grubby fingers. The reach of this is now many times worse than a century ago while the fundamental ideology of nudism is as relevant as (arguably more relevant than) it was then. I believe this is an ideological struggle and, for me, the core issue is still the freedom to own our bodies...
I think Naturism is a fine word to brand our beliefs. The word "Nudism" or "Nudist" gets too many tee-hee responses, yet "Naturism" or " Naturist", once explained to the intended audience is an EXCELLENT description of how we like to live our lives.
There are bigger fish in the ocean to address, and changing the name is just not one of them. Just like the Gulf of Mexico will always be the Gulf of Mexico, Naturism will always be Naturism.
Certainly does, but if you look at the movement as a whole, our imagery is very dated. Websites for many of the landed resorts and others, seem like they were made in the early 2000s. That's a big turn off for the younger generations. It's currently not clean and polished. We need more influencers supporting the movement as well. Regardless of the terminology, it needs to be body positive and engaging.
I think that many people don't understand that "naturism" is actually is "nudism". Clothes free has some misconceptions related to it as well. I think "nudism" makes it clear what is being talked about. Unfortuneately, too many inaccurately equate nude with porn.
True - but predominantly in the U.S. Elsewhere in the world the terms nudism and naturism imply distinct differences in the motivation behind the two practices.
I really feel personally that the term Naturism to describe people that live textile free is the wrong term to use. Especially in north America. In north America the term Naturist describes someone who makes a living studying nature. Such as fish, animals, and plants in the natural habitat. it is to easy to get the terms mixed up. At least for me. I think nudism is a better term which it is being textile free. Just my opinion.
I agree with Jerry and Rokker, you're both correct. But I think Brians point is people don't know there actually is two different words. Naturist and Naturalist are the same to most people in the North America. I have had that conversation several times.
"I'm a Naturist." "Oh you like being in or studying Nature?" "No that's a Naturalist." "It's the same thing."
In recent years, I have witnessed several Nudist Resorts that have strayed from what was once a wholesome, family club to a swingers haven. I believe this has proven to be a detriment to what Naturism is (or should) be all about. It isn't easy to convince the general public that Nudisum is a good and natural experience when you have to overcome the stigma of being a sex club. I believe clubs that deviate from the core beliefs of Naturisum should lose any recognition or support from respected accredited Nudist Associations.
Like anything it need updating with current times. Does much need to change? No.
But we must reclaim all three forms from the sex industry who has tried to claim.nudity as a disguise for their products. A LOT of people i talk to about nude recreation pucture sexual activities until i correct their misunderstanding. Hopefully i do enought that they properly understand our style of life and recreation is family friendly. Nudists, i think, show less unnessesary PDAs than textiles.
Naturism does not work. People who are new to or run into the word don’t know what it means and are likely to interpret it as nature-loving. It also gets confused with naturalist. Clothing-optional is equally confusing - how “optional”?
I’m going on a naturist vacation. Tell that to 10 non-nudists and most would have no idea what I’m doing on my vacation. Some would think I’m going to explore flora and fauna.
I’d like to see “clothes free” used more often. Simple direct words everyone understands. I’m going on a clothing free or clothes free vacation. Also, use the word “nude” more often although that word may raise eyebrows to the uninitiated more often than clothes free. Free and freedom have a positive vibe.
Instead, no clothes allowed be owned this point

"Free body liberation" is the term being used in my close circle
I also think that the health benefits need to be stressed of being nude
