This week on Planet Nude 🪐
Jan Gay: An enigmatic cultural force
A fascinating exploration of Jan Gay, a pioneering figure in nudism and LGBTQ+ rights. Born Helen Reitman, she emerged as an advocate for nudity and a voice for the lesbian community, challenging societal norms with her groundbreaking work, including the 1932 book "On Going Naked" and the documentary film "This Nude World." Despite facing the era's severe constraints on sexual information and LGBTQ+ identities, Gay's contributions to early sex studies, children's literature, and the rights of marginalized communities carved out new spaces for freedom and understanding. Her life's work, though somewhat overshadowed, remains a testament to her enduring legacy of advocacy and empowerment.
