Sunnier Palms rebuilding after Hurricane Milton
The naturist community is working together to restore their beloved park after devastating damage
On October 10, 2024, Sunnier Palms Nudist Park and Campground in Fort Pierce, Florida, was devastated by a tornado spawned by Hurricane Milton. The storm left significant destruction in its wake, damaging homes, facilities, and infrastructure throughout the park. Now, just two months later, the community’s spirit and determination are driving a remarkable rebuilding effort.
Progress in recovery
The tornado caused extensive damage, with many homes deemed uninhabitable and vital amenities rendered unusable. The clubhouse sustained major structural harm, while the electrical and water systems were knocked offline. The pool, hot tub equipment, and fencing around the property, along with the entry gate, were all destroyed. Despite these challenges, Sunnier Palms has made strides toward recovery.
“My name is Roy, and I’ve been asked by Julene, the president of Sunnier Palms, to start this fundraiser,” wrote Roy, a Sunnier member, on the fundraiser’s GoFundMe page. “The damage was extensive… insurance is slow and does not cover everything. We need your help. So many have already helped with the initial cleanup and protection of property. As we rebuild, any and all financial assistance will be appreciated.”
Residents, campers, and volunteers quickly mobilized to secure the property, clear debris, and begin repairs. For many, water service has been restored, and the main gate is operational again. Plans for fence replacement are underway, and repairs to the pool area have started. Security patrols, conducted by residents and local sheriff's deputies, have also helped keep the area safe during the ongoing work. With continued support, the park aims to fully reopen by the end of 2024.
A resilient history
The story of Sunnier Palms is one of perseverance. Its origins trace back to the Sunny Palms Lodge, a 40-acre nudist resort founded in 1948 by naturist pioneer Reed Suplee in Florida City. Sunny Palms Lodge was a well-loved destination for naturists, offering a secluded environment, recreational facilities, and a strong community.
In 1984, Suplee sold the 40-acre property to the DuPont company, which repurposed the land for industrial use. The sale led to the closure of the resort, leaving the Sunny Palms members without a landed home. Rather than disband, the community organized as a non-landed club, continuing to meet and sustain their shared values.
Their persistence paid off in 1992 when they acquired land in Fort Pierce and founded Sunnier Palms Nudist Park and Campground. Since then, Sunnier Palms has operated as a cooperative, member-owned community, carrying forward the legacy of Sunny Palms Lodge and serving as a welcoming haven for naturists.
Supporting the rebuild
In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, Sunnier Palms has launched a fundraiser to help rebuild critical infrastructure, including pool equipment, fences, and the main entry gate. Organized by Roy at the request of Julene, the park’s president, the fundraiser is vital to ensuring Sunnier Palms can recover fully.
“All donations will be used for the rebuilding of those items needed for reopening, such as the fence, security gate, pool fence, and pool equipment,” Roy explained. “Before long, with everyone’s help, Sunnier Palms will be back in full operation, welcoming all our current and future friends.”
Donations have already accelerated repairs, and the outpouring of support from members and friends has been inspiring. However, much work remains to be done. Contributions of any amount are greatly appreciated and will directly impact the park’s ability to reopen.
