This is very interesting to read. And I’m sure the findings will be replicated in countries like Ghana and other African countries.

Why should this matter to me. Different government, different culture, different lifestyles. What matters is our continued freedom to enjoy a lifestyle without restrictions or persecution in our own country....

Hey Frank, I can tell you how this article has helped me and hopefully that will answer your question! I found this article humbling to remember that though, as you said, it is a different government, culture, lifestyle, etc; there really is not much difference between us no matter where we live: just people trying to, again as you said, enjoy a lifestyle without restrictions or persecution. I also found it wonderful to appreciate what freedoms we do have in this country for nudity compared to Nigeria, and others, and how far we have come to get here. It is important to understand and remind ourselves what pious and conservative colonialism can do to a country and how it can infect the human spirit within a culture like it clearly has to Nigeria. It's also amazing to learn how this author went through some difficult, and sometimes dangerous, obstacles to collect the data he needed for liberalization, just as many Americans have had to do for the same results throughout our own country's history. This helps me to continue fighting for my beliefs in my own country by understanding the persecution in others. Make sense?

I'm concerned about a certain group of murderers with the initials BH. And even a beauty contest triggered violent riots.

Really from which part of Nigeria?

I'm referring to the Islamist group that kills people they don't like and kidnapped one hundred young girls to make them sex slaves. Some have not escaped or been rescued to this day. I've never been to Africa, but to the best of my knowledge, they controlled northern Nigeria for a time.

Muslims in Nigeria also rioted violently once because they objected to Nigeria holding a beauty contest. Killing people was, to them, more acceptable than holding a beauty contest. Hopefully the Nigerian authorities finally got BH under control.

Powerful. The risks to the author and the people in Nigeria who told their stories are profound. I lived in similar countries in Asia and Africa and can only begin to understand what it might feel like of being found out. What courage!

Outstanding! Thanks so much for bringing this research forward, at personal and professional risk as you pointed out. We naturists should learn about social nudism around the world and not just Europe. Personally I would love to know more about social nudism and topfreedom in pre-colonial West African cultures.

The heat and humidity in many parts of Nigeria make nudity an attractive option but values coming from religion and colonialism will fight against it. Some see nudity as primitive and underdeveloped. They would say that going around with little or nothing on might be suitable for poor people living in the bush but hardly appropriate in a civilized society.

Truly, luckily for me my grand father being a king made people not view my lifestyle as someone from poverty rather a one of the outcast or weird rich kid. It truly is sad that many in Nigeria and Africa as a whole have such mentality and beliefs
