We all have work to do in the yard. Lawn yoga. Garden yoga. Why not do it naked? My only problem is that I have neighbors on one side and a city park on the other. I'm fairly confident on my deck, but venturing naked into the yard is going to take a tree-screening/strategic fencing project. Gloves and shoes, if needed. Who wants blisters or a thorn in your foot? May is pretty early to have many callouses.
I had to give my little plot a rest after 25 years, so moved everything to pots inside my privacy fence around my pool. Now its all nekkid gardening. I would go to your local nursery get a couple pepper/tomato plants and maybe an herb and put into pots Have a watering strategy for when you leave for extended times. Pay attention to how the sun shines in your space.
Hey, that's me in the picture! Thanks for making me the face of your World Naked Gardening Day post, Evan. What an honor!
You ask, "What would Andy do?" Well, I'll tell you... I'm currently far from my little garden in San Francisco. I have arranged to spend part of Saturday gardening at the home of friends. They're not nudists/naturists, but they accept me for who I am. They're fine with my nudity. One of the couple is having severe knee issues, so they'll be glad of some extra help in their yard. He has promised to take photos while his [clothed] wife and I dead-head the roses and do a but of weeding.
I hope to participate here in Nevada, it’s my first year in many years having a more substantial yard to play in than my condo balcony in California. Plus, this yard needs a little more privacy for nude swimming, so I’m thinking about some tall hedges or something.
My view on this is to look back at the history of the WNGD. Ostensibly started in Seattle, it was originally created in England by a nudist couple who began gardening in the nude on their isolated property. The date they selected and maintained by the American organizers (the first Saturday in May) does not really work for over half of the country. When considering the USDA Plant Hardiness Map, over 1/2 of the country, (200-250 million people live in Hardiness zones 1-7. Those zones typically have not only colder winter temperatures, but the recommendation is to be very cautious planting prior to Memorial Day...which of course is at the end of May. When I took the Master Gardener course here in Michigan, we were advised we could have a hard frost right up to Memorial Day. My comment for this topic is a suggestion: Change the date of WNGD to the first Saturday in June. While those in warmer sections of the country can start much earlier, the celebration of gardening in the nude should be something all of us can participate in. (I plan to write a longer article on this topic for PN later this month....but thought I'd throw in my thoughts now in advance.)
For us in the northern hemisphere the first Saturday in May is way too early for naked gardening. Many of the northern parts of Sweden/Norway/Finland still have snow on the ground!
It's not relevant to the whole world, and for most people south of the Tropic of Capricorn, the chosen date makes no sense whatsoever. An Antipodean NGD would ideally be observed in October/November, not May.
The comment refers to “half of the country," meaning the US without specifying as much. The event is WORLD Naked Gardening Day, and that includes the southern hemisphere where June is in the dead of winter. So, the proposal to move the date to June would in no way benefit “all of us.”
The way I see it, the actual date isn’t very important. The main point of World Naked Gardening Day is not that everyone should actually get out and garden nude on that one day; the object is to increase awareness of nudist/naturist lifestyles and non-sexualized clothesfree activities in a good humored and non-threatening way. WNGD receives a fair amount of (un)coverage in the mainstream press and on social media sites, and I believe that’s what really matters. Maybe we should all simply take a few pics whenever our local weather is suitable, save them, and post them in May? Just a thought... and I recognize that, as a Californian, it's easy for me to say.
This is one of the most natural things to do in the nude. Just enjoy yourself, while doing your home improvement chores. It’s okay to wear gloves, boots and other safety apparel. If you have place where you can get away with naked gardening and landscaping, then there are no rules in the first place. Get out there.
A big garden around a big house, that’s the conditions for my naked gardening. I love being naked in the garden, can do most things and tasks needed. BUT - of course I use gloves when that is needed, for protection of the to some extent vulnerable hands. Same with shoes and feet. And when working with heavy electrical tools, like chain saw and hedge cutter, efficient protective clothes, helmet and boots are needed. Especially for chain saw and bush cutter. Safety first!
Don't be offensive if there are neighbors and safety first with saws and other power tools. Likewise some stinging insects. Lived 25 years on 5 hillside acres with great West and Northside privacy, all be it a few bees. Never stung, always looked forward to maintenance on that side!
Start small and then increase year by year. Naked with gloves sounds like a perfect picture moment. 😀😀
Being naked in the garden surrounded by nature is wonderful. But when it comes to doing the actual work, I call the landscapers.
Avoid anything with thorns. Be VERY careful with power tools. Join https://garden.org/

The garden I use is not surrounded by trees so can not garden naked. Best advice starting small and work from there.

First Saturday in June would be better for sure!

Typical northern hemisphere arrogance.
Bingo! (And I live in California.)

Stay away from bromeliads, agave and cactus. Use welding goves.
