Lupin Lodge turns 91 in Los Gatos
A weekend birthday celebration in the redwoods of Northern California
Ninety-one is a strange number to celebrate. Anniversaries usually draw attention when they end in zero or five. In fact, Lupin Lodge had been preparing for its 90th this summer—until recent research by Planet Nude contributor
revealed incorporation records from 1934, not 1935 as the club had always believed.1 That small correction makes this weekend’s birthday party the 91st instead. It’s an odd milestone, but maybe a fitting one. At 91, you don’t wait for round numbers to throw a party. You celebrate every year you get.
That feels especially true for Lupin right now. The club has been up for sale for nearly two years, with an asking price of $32.8 million. Members and residents have lived with that uncertainty—wondering whether this summer might be the last. Some have organized as Friends of Lupin, hoping to pool resources and keep the community alive, but the price tag looms large. However it plays out, the weight of the moment is felt by everyone who calls Lupin home.
Against that backdrop, this weekend’s party seems to matter more than any old tentpole anniversary. It’s a resonant reminder of what Lupin has always been: a gathering place, a community in the redwoods, a refuge for body freedom in Northern California for more than nine decades.
A birthday party weekend
The celebration runs August 22–24. Friday night brings a screening of Skin: A History of Nudity in the Movies. Saturday’s lineup includes yoga, a bird show, games, a champagne toast, a pool party with DJ Drew, book club, and a balloon-themed DJ dance late into the night. Sunday winds down with water volleyball and crafts. Camping, RV, and yurt lodging options are available.
Lupin has been through fire, earthquake, drought, scam, and scandal in its 91 years, not to mention seen immense cultural change, and it is still showing up to celebrate. In this moment, showing up matters—including through attendance, memberships, and support. Because Lupin is still here, and needs its community more than ever. That’s reason enough to gather and raise a glass.
And here’s to hoping we’ll be back next year to toast 92. 🪐
