In the spring of 2023, I stumbled across the Twitter account of Dr. Vian Aziz. At the time, she had only recently begun posting about her experiences with naturism, but already her posts felt striking—intelligent, vulnerable, and unapologetically bold. Over a number of weeks, her story came into some light. It was evident that she was a Muslim-born, UK-based gynecologist and mother of four, raised in conservative Iraq, now speaking publicly about the liberating power of social nudity. She was rapidly gaining followers, due in part to her posting nude images of herself—a sure way to attract large numbers of followers—but also largely due, I believe, to the power of her words. Her words weren’t just about nudity—they were about feminism, trauma, loss, faith, sexuality, and healing. I had never seen someone with such a short timeline into naturism speak about it with such clarity and conviction. I knew immediately that hers was a story I wanted to tell.
So I reached out. But, of course, with the attention she was attracting, I wasn’t the first podcast host to do so.
