Excellent article. Ed is deservedly in the AANR Hall of Fame for his many accomplishments. That said, he pushed boundaries in unfortunate ways, especially in regard to published photographs. For example, no doubt because Ed clearly saw the increasing popularity (and profitability) of sexually explicit publications and corresponding decreases in subscriptions to traditional nudist publications, the photos in some of his magazines grew more provocative. This made some nudist leaders nervous to the point where when the ASA named the new Nudism Today as its official journal, editorials in the first first issue by several nudist leaders warned Ed to avoid publishing of sexually provocative photos. He adhered to that warning for while, but in the end, after some photos had clearly crossed the line, the ASA to end its association with it.

In regard to the archives of Ed Lange and Elysium Fields, it is true that his daughters disposed of the large majority of his photographs. But a substantial amount of his documents, including correspondence and legal filings, were saved by Gary Mussell. Gary donated a portion of those documents to the Western Nudist Research Library in 2008. And recently, Dr. Jonathan Allan conducted a detailed inventory of them. Those documents, plus ones still in Gary's possession, will allow new and more nuanced stories to be told about Ed Lange's legacy in the future.
