Comic Title: Diary of the Astro-Nudes by Ahmed Raafat Comic Subtitle: Sunkissed! Panel 1: On a sunny day, Janet and Brad step outside wearing bathing suits. Janet says, “Look! It’s a perfect day to sit outside and get a tan!” Brad, carrying folded towels, adds, “Come and join us! I brought extra towels!” Arr and Arreya peek out through a window, watching them. Panel 2: Janet rubs lotion onto Brad’s back. Watching curiously, Arr asks, “What is this lotion that you are applying to his back?” Arreya stands beside him, also interested. Panel 3: Janet holds up a bottle and replies, “Sunscreen!” She continues, “It helps protect our skin from the sun while letting us get a nice shiny tan!” Then she offers, “Would you like some?” Panel 4: Sitting on towels in the sun, Arreya smiles and replies, “I don’t think we need it…” Arr adds, “Our skin is used to sun exposure!” Panel 5: Later, Brad and Janet sit indoors reading while cries of “OUCH! OUCH! OUCH!” echo from outside. They glance up from their newspapers toward the open doorway. Panel 6: Arr and Arreya return indoors badly sunburned. Arr says, “I think we may have underestimated your sun…” Janet replies, “Good job you don’t wear any clothes.”

Diary of the Astro-Nudes

Inspired by 1960s nudist camp films like “Diary of a Nudist,” and sci-fi shows such as “My Favourite Martian,” Diary of the Astro-Nudes is the story of Ar and Arreya, two inter-dimensional explorers who come from a parallel Earth where clothes don’t exist. They crash-land into an Earth very much like ours circa 1950s, and, living there with a couple named Brad and Janet while they try to fix their ship, they examine our attitudes towards nudity and the human body.

I love Diary of the Astro-Nudes because it uses science fiction to expose how arbitrary clothing norms can look from the outside. A world where clothes do not exist is funny on the surface, but it also creates a useful mirror for our own assumptions about bodies, shame, and normality.
