I'll admit it: I'm a nudist and a (somewhat recovered) clothes horse. I figure if I gotta wear clothes, and I do being in a profession where men still wear wool suits, cotton shirts, silk ties, and leather shoes, I might as well look good. So this means I do buy quality, natural fiber clothes, which last decades. Maybe it's easier dressing male since I can go for lasting style rather than passing fashion. But as you wrote, the impacts are lessened when one does go for better made, longer lasting stuff, which actually saves money in the long run.

When I wear clothes at all I wear a casual kilt and t shirt. Because I only wear clothes when in public and the ventilation provided by a kilt. I can go almost a week before the need to wash a kilt, as opposed to washing pants after only one or two days. Because the kilt moves with and around your body friction is not generated to break down and abrade the material. My oldest kilt is over 20 years old and aside from a little fading it is whole and serviceable. I do one load of laundry every 2 weeks. When people ask why I wear kilts I tell them it is the next best thing to wearing nothing at all.
