I honestly can’t remember when I first met Dan Speers. It might have been four or five years ago when we first crossed paths online. We interacted sparingly. But over time, his name would come up or we’d have some reason to touch base, and I began to learn more about Dan’s story—how he grew up in a naturist household, his involvement in Gunnison and the Tri-State Metro Naturists (TSMN) in the 80s and 90s, his involvement in various other projects and at Sky Farm—and I started to realize that his story could be the basis of a great a Naked Age episode.

When I first approached Dan about it, I already had three others in production and almost no bandwidth. I floated the idea as a “someday” project, and it stayed that way for over a year. It wasn’t until March of this year—after releasing a cluster of episodes and finally clearing my editorial slate—that we found time to sit down and talk. I had a handful of ideas for future episodes and, for once, the space to start recording again.

Dan grew up in a naturist family in Florida, then found his footing as an adult with the Tri-State Metro Naturists, the volunteer group that helped defend and legitimize Gunnison Beach during a formative moment in East Coast naturist history. Today, he continues that legacy through his leadership at Sky Farm, the country’s oldest nudist club, and through new initiatives that aim to support ethical, sustainable naturist culture.

Our conversation traces the spaces Dan inherited, the ones he helped build, and the ones he’s still working to keep open for whoever comes next.

In the spring of 2023, I stumbled across the Twitter account of Dr. Vian Aziz. At the time, she had only recently begun posting about her experiences with naturism, but already her posts felt striking—intelligent, vulnerable, and unapologetically bold. Over a number of weeks, her story came into some light. It was evident that she was a Muslim-born, UK-based gynecologist and mother of four, raised in conservative Iraq, now speaking publicly about the liberating power of social nudity. She was rapidly gaining followers, due in part to her posting nude images of herself—a sure way to attract large numbers of followers—but also largely due, I believe, to the power of her words. Her words weren’t just about nudity—they were about feminism, trauma, loss, faith, sexuality, and healing. I had never seen someone with such a short timeline into naturism speak about it with such clarity and conviction. I knew immediately that hers was a story I wanted to tell.

So I reached out. But, of course, with the attention she was attracting, I wasn’t the first podcast host to do so.

Some episodes of Naked Age take painstaking months—sometimes years—to complete. As the editor of a daily newsletter, I’m used to meeting deadlines and rushing things out quickly, so it’s refreshing to have a project unfold a little more organically. That said, I try to stick to my goal of producing four episodes a year—not just for the sake of consistency, but to avoid falling into the trap of turning a brief hiatus into an extended sabbatical.

I usually have two or three episodes in the works at any given time: raw interviews waiting to be shaped, stories I’m still mulling over, and at least one edit nearing completion. After the intense effort that went into last year’s episodes, I took a short breather from editing. I recorded an interview (slated for 2025) and kept chipping away at ideas. But suddenly, I blinked, and it was December—and none of my ongoing projects were anywhere near finished. I wasn’t going to rush them, but I needed something to put out.

Luckily, history is rich with inspiration.

The Neo Naturists

I’d known about the Neo Naturists for a few years, but only in the abstract. I had a vague sense of their legacy as creative artists from the UK—a group of women engaging with body painting and feminist themes. I knew they were impactful in some way, but beyond that, I didn’t know much. Still, I always wanted to learn more, to have a reason to do a deep dive. Their name alone, the Neo Naturists, coupled with their work spanning various mediums—performance, public happenings—was enough to intrigue me. They just seemed cool. But researching them never made it to the top of my priorities, and so, for years, they sat on the back burner.

Morley Schloss has been on my list of subjects to interview for Naked Age since the podcast’s inception in 2020. It took me three years to make contact with him, and when I finally reached him by phone in Spring 2023, two things became clear: First, he had many wonderful stories to tell, so our interview would likely take significantly longer than the average; and second, due to his not being much of a computer person, a typical Zoom interview was not a viable option for this discussion. Morley was generous and witty and more than happy to speak with me, but he basically informed me in a roundabout way that I was going to have to travel to Florida to make this interview work.

For months, I tried to plan a Florida trip, but due to my heavy involvement in Florida nudism as a volunteer for groups like the American Association for Nude Recreation, the American Nudist Research Library in Kissimmee, and the BEACHES Foundation Institute based in Miami, this was going to have to be a multifaceted business trip with several stops. Due to the associated expenses and requisite time commitments, this trip quickly became unwieldy, and it eventually became apparent that it was not likely to happen any time soon.

There went that idea.

Then, one day in early January of this year, I woke up very early one morning feeling dispirited by the likelihood that my meeting with Morley would never occur under the current circumstances. I opened Twitter and posted a somewhat desperate tweet:

You learn about Dennis Craig Smith’s book Growing Up Without Shame fairly early in nudist history school. Obviously, nudist history school isn’t really a thing; but for me, but when I first discovered this vast-yet-insular subculture of nudists and nudism, it felt a little like an intense study program the way I immersed myself in learning more about the books and other media that have been held onto, studied, preserved and celebrated within this community over many years.

Dennis’s book has become a cherished resource among nudists and naturists, particularly those who are parents. It appeals to people who have raised their children in nudist environments, as well as folks who are considering or already participating in family friendly nudism with young kids or grandchildren. The reason for the book’s forty-year currency is clear. It presents a cogent argument that naturism is safe for children. It provides vital information for naturist parents, equipping them with some defense should their lifestyle choices ever be questioned. With few studies available on the subject, Dennis's work stands out as one of the most accessible and relevant resources for parents seeking guidance and support in this area.

“Growing Up Without Shame” is out of print and difficult to find for purchase. If you’re diligent in searching, you might find one pop up online.

But outside of the book itself, not much is usually said of Dennis. His considerable contributions to the nudist community span several decades and have occasionally been written about over the years on the pages of Nude & Natural (now known as N magazine), but most who have only heard of him through his book would never know about his broader impact. I certainly didn’t before discovering him through Mark Storey’s great teleconference series for The Naturist Society Foundation last year. But I shared that story already, in the episode itself.

Today, we learn about the lives of Jeannette Schuster and Zelda Suplee, two trailblazing figures in American nudism whose vision and determination transformed Sunny Rest Lodge in Pennsylvania into a pivotal hub for nudists across the nation. This is Naked Age.

When reflecting on the pioneers of any movement, do we sufficiently recognize the women who often stand in the shadows of history? Within the nudist movement specifically, women’s roles have been multifaceted and complex. And there exists a striking contrast. The movement's early visuals and narratives often reflected exploitive views of women to sell magazines and propagate their ideas.

Yet within the core of the movement, influential female leaders carved out their own paths, pioneers who defied these norms.

The essence of our story today isn’t just that Jeannette and Zelda Suplee both married J. Reed Suplee. In today’s episode, we’ll explore the captivating lives of two pioneering women in the nudist movement. Woody at home, c. 1990

I never had the pleasure of meeting Woody Miller, though I was familiar with him for a few years before his death from leukemia earlier this year.

I first learned about Woody in the excellent 2020 documentary film NAK-ED by Jan Dalchow, which, among other items relating to nudity and nude expression, also covered the events of the 2012 legislative nudity ban in San Francisco. In the film, Woody is seen alongside other nude activists, protesting nude outside city hall and speaking out passionately against the bans. I’m not sure if it was due to his imposing stature, his bushy greying beard, or perhaps the giant septum ring, but he stuck out to me.

Later, when I was preparing to interview Andy Tabbat for his episode of Naked Age, San Francisco Naked Guy, I noticed Woody in many of Andy’s photos. After inquiring and learning his name, I discovered more of Woody’s writing about nudity and history, and learned just how thoughtful and educated he was, and how progressive his views were.

From initial introduction to finished episode, this expedition into the nudist career of Petra Scheller took over ten months. While Petra was influential in Canadian nudism for more than three decades, most of the writing by or about her occurred on the pages of Canadian nudist magazines I have little access to in Southern California. It took multiple informal preliminary interviews and fact finding before I realized how deep her story actually ran, and how much more work I would have to do to do justice to its telling. From the moment we were introduced over email by a mutual friend, she was incredibly gracious and patient with me as I probed into her history of running around naked.

“Since mankind’s beginnings, clothing has occupied the minds and bodies of individuals. Its first logical role was for protection. Then adornment became an added raison d’etre. However not until the words of the Bible were interpreted to the masses did modesty enter into the picture. And it is the very preoccupation with modesty that has given the representation of the nude body various degrees of acceptability in society.”

Of course, Petra has accomplished far more than merely a tally of years of running around naked (not that there would be anything wrong with it if that's all it was). As the episode will uncover, she had quite a trajectory in her career as a nudist advocate. And when you hear her recount story after story of different places her nudism took her and the different faces it put her in contact with, it becomes clear how influential her journey has been, not just for herself, but for the wider nudism movement.
