America accidentally declares war on spaghetti

A brief trade dispute with Italy, and how it ended

For about three months last fall, the United States government was technically at war with pasta.

In September 2025, the Commerce Department proposed a 91.7% anti-dumping tariff on thirteen Italian pasta makers — including Barilla, Garofalo, and Rummo — stacked on top of an existing 15% EU tariff, bringing the total above 107%. Italian pasta retailing around $4 a pound would have more than doubled overnight. Trade organizations warned exports would be “virtually wiped out.” Americans panic-posted on Reddit about stockpiling De Cecco.

Then, on New Year’s Day, Commerce quietly walked most of it back. Proposed rates dropped from 92% to as low as 2.26% for some producers. The Italians called it a recognition of their “constructive cooperation.” The spaghetti stayed on the shelves.

It bears mentioning the U.S. has been monitoring Italian pasta companies for dumping violations since 1996. The noodle cold war, it turns out, has been simmering for thirty years. 🍜

Cavatappi and the pop star who inspired it

A corkscrew noodle, a dancing singer, and one of pasta’s strangest naming decisions

Cavatappi rarely receives the same attention as spaghetti or penne, but the spiral tube once had a far more glamorous identity. When the shape first appeared in Italian pasta catalogs in the mid-20th century, it was marketed under the name cellentani, a reference to Adriano Celentano, one of Italy’s most famous singers.

Celentano’s nickname was Il Molleggiato—“the springy one”—a reference to his loose, energetic dancing style. The corkscrew shape of the pasta seemed like a natural match. A noodle with a little bounce to it, named after a performer known for the same quality. For a time, the association stuck. Pasta companies sold the shape under the celebrity name, pairing it with the usual claims about how well its ridges held sauce and how its hollow center helped heat circulate during cooking.

Eventually the name shifted. When one manufacturer trademarked cellentani, competitors adopted a simpler description for the same corkscrew form: cavatappi, literally “corkscrews.” The spiral tube itself never changed. It still performs the same reliable job in baked dishes and heavier sauces.

Celentano is still alive and noodling around at 89 years old, presumably still upset that his name is no longer synonymous with the spiraled noodle, but hopefully not too bitter to enjoy his own baked dish from time to time. He can at least take some solace in the memory that for a brief period, one of pasta’s most practical shapes carried his branding. 🍜

The pasta spoon and its mysterious hole

A kitchen tool most people misunderstand

Most kitchens contain a pasta spoon: a wide, claw-like utensil with curved teeth and a curious hole in the center. It usually lives in a drawer beside ladles and spatulas, taken out occasionally to lift noodles from boiling water.

Let’s talk about the hole.

For decades, many cooks assumed it was simply decorative or intended to drain water. In reality, it was originally designed to measure a serving of dry spaghetti. A bundle of noodles threaded through the opening roughly equals one portion.

The feature is clever, if oddly specific. It turns the utensil into both a measuring device and a serving tool—two functions built around the peculiar needs of long noodles. The spoon’s teeth serve a similar purpose. They grip slippery strands of pasta while allowing water or sauce to drain back into the pot.

The overall design reflects a kitchen truth that has endured for generations: spaghetti is difficult to control once it becomes wet. 🍜

The noodle that K-pop built

How South Korean instant ramen became a global export strategy

For most of its existence, instant ramen carried a specific cultural meaning: affordable, convenient, and slightly embarrassing to be caught buying in bulk.

South Korean ramyeon makers have spent the last few years aggressively rebranding that, and it appears to be working. Nongshim—the company behind Shin Ramyun—named K-pop group Aespa as global ambassadors in late 2025, following a Netflix collaboration on a K-pop Demon Hunters-themed noodle line. Ottogi, maker of Jin Ramen, tapped BTS member Jin as its brand model; a casting decision that, given the product’s name, was either brilliant planning or an extraordinary coincidence.

The economics are straightforward: eating out in the U.S. and Europe has become expensive, and ramyeon is flavorful, filling, and about a dollar a pack. The U.S. instant noodles market has grown 36% over five years and now tops $2.7 billion. Inflation built the market. K-pop showed up to take credit.

The humble noodle, it turns out, didn’t need a rebrand. It just needed a good enough reason for people to try it. 🍜

The man who kept inventing new ways to eat noodles

From backyard ramen experiments to a pantry staple and noodles designed for astronauts

Momofuku Ando invented instant noodles when he was 48 years old, working alone in a small shed behind his house in Osaka.

In the years after World War II he often saw people standing in long lines for ramen. Determined to create a noodle that could be prepared quickly at home, he began experimenting with wheat noodles and frying oil in that backyard workshop. His breakthrough came when he discovered that frying cooked noodles created tiny pores that allowed them to rehydrate rapidly in boiling water. The result was Chicken Ramen, released in 1958.

But Ando kept improving the idea. While visiting the United States in the late 1960s, he noticed Americans preparing instant noodles in paper cups and eating them with forks. The observation led to his next invention: Cup Noodles, a noodle that arrived already packaged inside its own bowl.

Most inventors would have stopped there, content with their unprecedented chrome in noodle science. Ando, being the noodle badass that he was, did not.

In his nineties he helped develop “Space Ramen,” a version of instant noodles designed for astronauts, with broth engineered to cling to noodles in zero gravity.

By the time he died at 96, Ando had spent nearly half his life refining the simple idea that noodles should be easy to eat anywhere. Including, if necessary, in orbit. 🍜

A brief taxonomy of pasta butterflies

The surprising number of species in the farfalle family

Farfalle are widely known in English as “bow tie pasta,” but the Italian name tells a different story. Farfalle means butterflies. Like actual butterflies, the farfalle family has several recognizable variations. The most common is farfalle itself: the standard butterfly, medium-sized and widely distributed across pasta salads, potlucks, and weeknight dinners. A smaller relative, farfalline, appears frequently in soups, valued for its ability to circulate through broth without drawing attention. At the opposite end is farfalloni, the large butterfly. These oversized specimens are less common but appear in specialty assortments, where their expanded wings hold more sauce.

Complicating matters further, some regions of Italy use a different name for the same creature. In Emilia-Romagna the shape is often called strichetti, or “little bows,” suggesting that even experienced pasta observers cannot always agree on the species. Regardless of the name, the defining characteristic remains the same: a pinched center knot with two thin wings, a simple geometry that has kept these pasta butterflies migrating through kitchens for generations. 🍜

Since early on, Planet Nude has included a section in the newsletter where we shared episodes from other nudist and naturist podcasts. The idea was simple: naturist media is a small world, and it felt worthwhile to help readers discover some of the other voices contributing to the conversation.

In many ways, that approach has worked well. Naturist podcasting has evolved during that time, with new shows emerging and others fading away, and it has been rewarding to highlight some of the creators working in that space.

At the same time, republishing full episodes from other podcasts meant the site was effectively syndicating work produced entirely outside our editorial process. That’s a different role from the one the publication usually plays.

While Planet Nude regularly publishes work from a wide range of contributors, the articles, essays, and comic strips on the site are all original work developed and edited within the publication itself. Those pieces become part of the site through an editorial relationship, not simply by being republished after the fact. Contributors work with us through an editing and approval process, and they are compensated for their work as part of that relationship.

Podcast syndication works differently. The shows we shared were created independently, with Planet Nude acting more as an aggregator than as a publisher. Ultimately, that isn’t really the role Planet Nude is meant to play.

Therefore, going forward, Planet Nude will focus on podcasts developed within the publication as part of its original editorial work, rather than republishing full episodes from other shows.

This doesn’t mean we’ll stop paying attention to naturist podcasting. We still plan to highlight new and emerging shows, and we will continue to support the creators whose work we’ve shared over the years in other ways.

Fortunately, naturist podcasting doesn’t depend on any single platform to find an audience. The naturist community has always been remarkably supportive of independent creators, and thoughtful projects in this space tend to easily find listeners or audiences on their own.

Planet Nude will continue focusing on the reporting, essays, comics, and podcasts developed within the publication’s pipeline. Original work and careful editorial collaboration have always been central to this project, and that commitment will continue guiding how we publish. 🪐

Frequently asked questions

Do current members qualify?

Only new memberships or upgrades that occur between March 1 and March 31 qualify for automatic entries. Existing members may purchase raffle tickets to participate.

How many times can I enter?

Each qualifying action earns three entries. There is no cap on qualifying actions.

Can I buy multiple raffle tickets?

Yes. Each $10 raffle ticket earns one entry. Three-packs can be purchased for $25. There’s no limit to how many you can purchase.

Do I have to be on Discord to win?

No. The drawing will take place live on Discord, but winners will be contacted directly by email.

What if I don’t respond?

Winners must reply within seven days to claim their prize. If we do not receive a response, an alternate winner may be selected.

Is a purchase required to enter?

No purchase necessary. To enter without purchase, email evan@planetnude.co with the subject line “March Raffle Entry” before March 31. Limit one free entry per person.

When will winners be announced?

The drawing will take place live the first week of April. The exact date and time will be announced during the final week of March. All winners will be notified by email (or Discord if they Discord-exclusive users) within one week of our drawing.

From the outside, nudity often gets framed as bold or shocking or rebellious—and it can be those things, for sure. But for many naturists or home nudists it’s usually much more mundane. For those just dabbling with a more nude-centric lifestyle, it’s often exciting, but with time, the novelty wears off. That doesn’t mean the feeling is less enjoyable or freeing, but what’s left is just ordinary life—reading a book, folding laundry, playing video games, chatting with friends, staring into space and dissociating under the weight of existence, or baking cookies. Over the past three years, Planet Nude has grown from a newsletter into something more social and participatory than was originally intended. Planet Nude’s Discord is a community space for readers who want conversation alongside the publication. It’s a place to connect beyond the inbox, follow conversations over time, and interact not just with Planet Nude and our daily content, but with each other.

What Discord is (briefly)

If you’ve never used Discord, think of it as a shared online space made up of different rooms, each focused on a topic. Some are text-based, some are for sharing images or art, and some support live voice or video. You can explore at your own pace, jump into conversation, or simply read along. All of that is welcome.

You don’t need to be “good at Discord” to be here.

What this space is not

Planet Nude’s Discord is a nonsexual naturist space. It is not an adult content platform, a dating space, or a place for sexualized performance. While nudity is central to the conversation, it’s treated as context rather than spectacle.

Moderation is present, proportional, and focused on keeping the space respectful, welcoming, and human-scaled. And due to the nature of having nudity in online spaces, some rooms are necessarily 18+.

More value for existing supporters

For readers who already support Planet Nude, the Discord adds more value at the same level of support—no upgrade required. Nudity offers a lot of therapeutic value in different contexts. Two important therapeutic foci include the comfort of intentional nudity, and the vulnerability of social nudity. These various aspects seem opposing but are not in conflict. Comfort can mean a feeling of ease or familiarity, or forgetting about your body altogether. Being seen can mean connection or vulnerability, or the feeling of awareness that you’re visible without being judged.

AI imagery is starting to show up in naturist outreach, and for understandably practical reasons. By avoiding using real bodies, they can help to get past a long list of complications that come with publishing nude images online, including consent and licensing issues, not to mention avoiding algorithmic censorship of real bodies. At the same time, it replaces the central claim naturism has always made: that body acceptance grows from seeing real people in real social settings.

That leaves a genuine dilemma. Authentic naturist photos remain hard to source and harder to share. Who appears or is represented in these materials affects who feels safe participating, and which images survive moderation all shape what the public sees. The algorithms are biased by what they’re trained on, which is rarely authentic naturist material. For some, AI may fill the gaps, but only by inventing bodies that were never present, never vulnerable, and never consenting in the first place.

It all presents a very complicated—and compellingly timely—stage for debate. So, in this week’s #UndressedThread, we want to know where you land:

Does AI imagery weaken the case for naturism by replacing lived experience?

When I saw that Planet Nude was starting a sticker club, I didn’t hesitate. I signed up immediately.

One of my favorite things to do is support artists who are creating within the niches where I find community. I’m pretty sure I picked this up somewhere else, so I won’t claim it as an original thought, but I’ve fully internalized this mantra: support the art you want to see in the world. That idea is what led me to become a paid subscriber to the Planet Nude newsletter in the first place, and it absolutely fueled my excitement when the sticker club was announced.

What really makes the Planet Nude Sticker Club special is that the designs come from multiple contributors within the broader Planet Nude-isphere — and those contributors are being paid for their work. This isn’t a faceless operation, and it’s not someone churning out AI-generated images or lifting art to make a quick buck. It’s a real community of artists crafting thoughtful, playful, meaningful work that celebrates a shared passion for nude living. I genuinely appreciate the coordination, care, talent, and time that clearly go into each monthly drop.

And it’s not just stickers, either. One month included a retro-style, single-sheet zine featuring an original illustrated story. Another included a newspaper-style insert with several articles focused on activism and protecting nude spaces. Those extras added depth and context, and they made each delivery feel intentional — like a small package of culture, not just merch.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t share one last anecdote, because it speaks to how unexpectedly meaningful this has been for me.

I’ve always had what I jokingly call “sticker anxiety.” It’s probably not a real thing, but I know I’m not alone. I’ve always struggled to actually use stickers, because once you place them somewhere, they’re gone. If I put one on my laptop, what happens when I get a new laptop? If it goes on a water bottle and the bottle gets lost, that sticker is gone forever. Some stickers carry real sentimental weight, and committing them to a permanent surface can feel weirdly stressful.

When I joined the PN Sticker Club, I remember thinking, What am I doing? I don’t even use stickers. I usually just let them collect in a box. That realization sent me down a rabbit hole, and I eventually found a handmade silicone-page sticker book. The pages hold stickers securely but allow them to be peeled off without damaging the adhesive. Now I’m building an album of stickers I’ve collected throughout my adult life — including every Planet Nude sticker.

In an unexpected way, this helped me get over that anxiety. I can enjoy and display these stickers without feeling like they’re wasted or gone forever. And if I ever want to give one away or permanently place it somewhere, I still can.

I’m genuinely thrilled to be part of the Planet Nude Sticker Club, and I’m grateful that this group of artists has another outlet to share their creative, joyful, and affirming nudie work with the world. 🪐
