Been a while since we've seen Sarah! Behind the scene's, she's been dating. The guy had to have a name for the alt text, so now his name is Stanley.

This comic was originally intended for the “AI art isn't natural” post, but I didn't get it done in time. Because the next regular Greyfriar's Isle comic isn't getting done in time either (I've started drawing the first page of the new storyline even though the story isn't yet fully written, but that page is still in its early stages), you're getting it now, as a filler comic.

Among the things that I object to about AI “art”, this is very low on the list, but it's on the list: the prevalence of slop is making cops of us all. More and more, people's engagement with new art and writing online is being reduced to checking it for the telltale signs of a piece being AI-generated. In prose, one such proposed tell is the “it's not X, it's Y” construction.

This doesn't work, ever. For one, the detective work we're doing for free and without anyone asking us for it is helping the tech teams that train the LLMs to improve their models, so that classic tells like too many fingers are now mostly gone from new pieces of slop. If the tell is that the “art” is too crisp, then in the next-gen model, they can muddy it up, and then the urine-stained newsprint look becomes the new tell.

For another, the models are ultimately trained on human output (much of which is, to be brutally honest, also slop). So things like the m-dash* or the “It's not X, it's Y” construction are there because human writers that the model was trained on used them liberally. And while some artists have tried to make a meaningful distinction between art errors hat only an AI would make and art errors that a human makes, most of these also have human counter-examples. A classic one that pretty much every artist has made is putting the wrong hand on a character, for example. There really is no such thing as a reliable tell that can be used to detect AI output and has no false positives or false negatives.

The only way to win this game is not to play. By all means, be critical of the possibility that someone may be presenting slop as their own work, but don't let that replace your engagement in art. Don't become the AI police.

I'm prone to doing this myself, by the way. I’m trying not to.

* and lemme tell you, based on my day job, that thing is beloved by legal writers today.

With that in mind, and seeing a disturbing trend of even naturists beginning to use genAI more often, a number of us Planet Nude artists have been making our own art to share across the internet and spread the word: AI just isn’t natural!

I will confess that I was the first person to kick this off, after a friend put the idea in my head. It took some time to determine what I wanted to do, but I eventually realized it had to be Asada and Mischa, who take so much after myself. I’ve been managing my own private figure drawing group for a decade now, and since last year have been making more of an effort to host sessions in public spaces, including our local library. It is my personal belief that a true antidote to AI is to make art with your own hands, with real tools, and with real people. Drawing a live model standing or sitting in front of you is wonderful, especially when others are with you doing the same. And if the model is holding up a middle finger while posing? That just makes things that much more fun.

Ed Bionic

The first person I spoke to about this, and who created a piece quicker than anyone else, was friend of the blog Ed Bionic, who made this short comic addressing the environmental impact of the usage of generative AI.

Reinder Dijkhuis

This was followed soon after by Reinder Dijkuis, creator of Greyfriar’s Isle. Reinder wanted to mimic the…we’ll just call them quirks, of genAI, particularly the frequent misspelling in a bad sans serif font and the weird, inherent randomness happening on a pixel level that’s responsible for AI images looking both strangely smooth and textured at the same time.

Zaftig Pink

Zaftig Pink brought his own sense of humor to the idea, with AI being represented by a giant computer unable to answer important questions that drive us.

Ahmed Raafat

Finally, from the log files of the Astro-Nudes, Ahmed Raafat takes us to Planet AI, a wasteland stripped of its resources and whose residents are incapable of critical thinking.

We encourage anyone that shares this feeling to contribute in any way they can, creating their own artwork and sharing it on social media. You need not even be a naturist or involve nudity. Show us the natural world around you, in your hand, with your mind and body. Together, we can show that humans do not now, nor ever have, needed machines to create for them. 🪐

in the previous installments, we’ve explored a myriad ways of taking flight. i believe it was douglas adams who said, “flying is merely the art of throwing all of yourself at the ground and then missing.” and isn’t that just so? the art of flying isn’t a matter of conceptualizing and optimizing the mechanisms for flight; it’s rather achieved by invoking the intent for its fulfillment continuously. of course, we are conceptualizing now with various methods, but these methods employ magical thinking—a child’s thinking. the methods aren’t necessary so much for their efficacy as for creating a thread of alignment between our intent and the fulfillment of our desire. when i weave, my intent is the warp and my desire is the weft. in time, and with discipline, desire matures into love. it’s like this: i’m in love with the sky, and through flight, i conduct my courtship with the sky. i yearn for the sky, and i hope piously for him to be my partner and lover.

so thanks to some suggestions from readers and my own reflections, i’ve come up with some more methods!

method iii – swim through the air

i love swimming, especially in the summer when it’s warm enough to swim in natural bodies of water, or at least outdoors. so i usually have dreams like this in the summer after i’ve spent a lot of time swimming. underwater, i like to wear goggles and hold my breath for as long as i can. i love being underwater where the sounds of voices are absorbed into the tide; we have to find other means to communicate. i try to inhabit the world underwater, and pretend i live there like a mermaid, or more simply, an aquatic being unburdened by the need for constant breaths.

if you do this enough and become familiar with the state of being underwater while you are awake, then when the dream comes, it’s just a matter of transposing that familiarity to whatever situation you find yourself (out of water) in the dream.

now let’s go to the dream: you find yourself in the dream, not underwater but in the open air. start with your hands, cup them, and then focus your attention on them as you move them through the air. by focusing your attention on the sensation of the air trapped between your fingers, you can thicken it, enhancing resistance as your hands traverse through the layers of air. then feel the air enveloping your body—at this point, if you don’t feel too bashful, it’s just a dream, remember, it may be helpful to take off your clothes. feel that the air is very thick and feel your body and limbs drift gently as you move through it. now, attune your breath to influence your body’s buoyancy; if your lungs are full with a breath, you’ll start to float up, but by exhaling your body will grow heavier and start sinking down.

at first, it’s hard to get up in the air; you have to take a really deep breath and then swim up as high as you can. when you exhale you’re going to drop down again like a heavy stone, so at this point you have two options: (a) you can focus on using your arms and legs to swim about in the air; this will give you more control, but it will be very strenuous and exhausting. or, (b) you can focus on your breath control and increase your buoyancy on the inbreath and try to limit the sinking effect on your outbreath.

it’s good to try a combination of both of these in alternating stints, if you rely too much on your arms and legs you’ll just exhaust yourself, but if you rely on your breath buoyancy too much you will find that you don’t have much control outside that vertical axis of floating and sinking (be careful! the lack of control can invoke anxiety, which could summon ground creepers to appear and make a nightmare situation!).

if you’re still having trouble getting enough buoyancy, you can try this other thing, though—i’ll warn you—this gets a little bit weird. in a dream the relationship between the breath and the body is a lot more malleable. the dream body is sort of putty-like and air can suffuse through it not just in the lungs, but all throughout your body. so, try this: as you take a deep breath in, don’t just bring the air into your chest, but also pull the air down into your belly. you’ll find there is a lot of room in your belly, and after a few breaths you’ll find that you can hold a lot of air in there, but of course this is going to make your belly puff up like a blimp, which is pretty embarrassing to be honest.

but, you know, it’s pretty effective, so if you’re having trouble getting up into the air, it’s worth trying at least once.

one thing to lookout for, though. as you create the association of being able to swim through the air of the dream environment, don’t let the environment take on the characteristics of being underwater! try to keep bearings through the landmarks below like trees and houses, or track birds and clouds in the sky. otherwise, you might suddenly find yourself deep on the bottom of the sea, which can be really scary—i’m sorry, but being in deep water in a dream is by its nature very scary; it’s not going to be like in the little mermaid…

well then, i hope you had a chance to try the flying method from part 1 in your dream. if you tried but it didn’t work, don’t give up! it’s hard to intend a dream and sometimes it’s even harder to fly. but you can do it! anyways, whether that worked or not, i’ll tell you of another method. there are lots of different ways to fly, and that’s what this journal is all about. if one method doesn’t work, then another method will. so with one means or another we’ll get you soaring in the clouds in no time.

method ii – flap your arms frantically like an anxious little bird

that’s right. as the heading says.. well, the heading says it all really. this method is about connecting with your childhood instinct for magical thinking. perhaps, as a child, you would pretend you were a bird. when i was a little girl, i would always pretend and become all kinds of animals: a cat, a rabbit, ..a tigress! but sometimes an eagle or a little sparrow. if i was an eagle i would flap my imaginary wings gallantly and swoop-strike at my brothers or playmates. but as a sparrow, i’d flap my arms frantically as fast as i could while staring up at treetops longingly until my arms would get sore, and then i’d fall down in a tantrum.

so it’s a dream state that follows that kind of childhood logic. mimicking the animal, you become like that animal. it’s not always the most efficient method, but there is an intuition to it that makes this method particularly accessible. there is also something divine about using the dream state to reconnect to your inner child’s sense of wonder, a view of reality that we only had once but lost. acting in such a way while awake might be considered regressive, but in dreaming, there is an opportunity to reintegrate some of that wonder back into the whole of your psyche.

so, the method is utterly simple: you think for a moment, oh! i’m like a bird! but then start flapping your hands like they’re wings, vigorously with diligent effort. it might not work at first, but then keep flapping with all your might! it’s just elbow grease against gravity! but you can imagine your body feeling lighter and your arms starting to lift you up. then make a little hop from your toes and see if you can keep your body suspended in the air for a moment, and then a moment more. gradually you’ll see that you are lifting off the ground.

that’s it, you’re doing it! you’re really flying! <|:D

at this point your arms are going to get really tired, and you’re probably going to want to take a little break. but see if you can fly up to a tree, or lamppost, or somewhere else high up to perch for a minute. then you can rest a bit and then after you’ve caught your breath, you can try again with a head start.

after trying again, if you can get even higher up, then as soon as your arms get tired, try switching to soaring: stretch your arms out and think, oh! i’m like an eagle, or a swan!

then swoop around! feel your body being carried by the wind! by thinking it, you can make your body light and free, it doesn’t matter if, in waking life, you are on a diet and trying to lose weight; in the dreaming you can make yourself buoyant and nigh weightless. you see, the method of flapping your arms is just the catalyst to get you in the air, but after that it’s easier to switch to another mode of flying such as changing the direction of down, or you might find yourself spontaneously able to soar about with the power of thought like storm or superman.

anyways, that’s the best-case scenario. but be warned that this method doesn’t always yield such satisfying results. you may find yourself expending an exorbitant amount of energy only to hover a few inches off the ground. in the worst case, it may even provoke unwanted dream encounters—you see there is something in the symbolism of striving exuberantly against gravity. the hands or wings are mercurial, while gravity is saturnian. in the domains of dream logic, this means the activity of trying to fly with your hands could invoke the abstract notion of anxiously struggling against relentless uncompromising fears or forces.

or, to put more simply, it may provoke creepers to appear in your dream, who come and try to get at you, which could, of course, turn into the nightmare where flying becomes the only means of getting away to safety.

while writing this, dear reader, i felt very hesitant to mention this possibility, since the suggestion may be the seed of thought that generates such a nightmare. but i felt it better to take responsibility and warn you rather than let such a nightmare catch you unaware.

but in truth, you know, it is healthy to acknowledge the symbols of our fears and anxieties in our dreams. we shouldn’t try to suppress nightmares, which have something important to tell us about our unconscious fears, and the method of dream flight gives us a means to, if not directly confront our fears, allow ourselves space to see them from a higher perspective.

symbolically, flight is an expression of potentiality. when the gravity of life’s situations makes us feel constrained, or trapped, or even doomed, we can forget that space exists. but that space is always there, open and pregnant with infinite potentiality. no matter how terrible the situation seems, there is always possibility. we can quit our job. we can break off a bad relationship. dream flight symbolically reminds us of this fundamental potentiality. although we must eventually come to ground and deal with what comes, you can at least give yourself that perspective from high up in the infinite sky where you can see how everything below is very tiny.

I knew what it looked like in Panel 3, so I had Jamie say it out loud in Panel 4.

This is a transitional page leading directly from the “Cemetery video shoot” storyline into the next storyline, called “Posh”. It’ll turn out to be relevant that it’s really early in the day…

Lots of worldbuilding in this page! The exterior of the clubhouse took shape for the first time. The place is now named “Hartwig’s” after the legendary beach comber Hartwig Visseboer. Back when I first conceived Greyfriar’s Isle, I thought it would be fun to have multiple conflicting legends about the origins of the island’s overall relaxed attitude to nudity. One of these would involve the Adamites, who we have now met, and sort of referenced their history through Mycelia’s tours. Another was going to be the tale of Hartwig Visseboer, who saw buried treasure in a vision but was only allowed to retrieve it if he was nude while doing so. I had more of those, but never got around to actually telling those stories in-comic. If you’re sitting on an idea and you’re not using it for years and years, sometimes it’s best to let it go.

The clubhouse has a notice board and other places where promotional materials get posted. The notice board has a poster for a World Naked Bike Ride, sent to me by reader @sillybare. At kid height, there’s a drawing of Little Hartwig, the mascot for the kids’ activities. Currently the club is looking for someone who can organize kids’ activities and given Cass’s easy rapport with the Stachouwer kids and Caroline, she may be a good candidate.

The kids do occasional odd-jobs around the campsite and no one seems to mind. They’re usually reasonably competent at the tasks they’re asked to do; one does wonder if the baker’s delivery of food is safe from being devoured. The ones in the bag were pre-ordered though, it’s not as if George would go in demanding croissants if he didn’t know they were already waiting for him.

Now to go and actually write “Posh!”

indeed, you can fly! and without any clunky gadgets. no need for jetpacks or wings, my friend. how, you ask? dear, it’s simple mind-over-matter! that is to say—if mind is foundational to reality, or, if at the very least, reality is co-emergent with mind, then all appearances are manifestations of our mind. “buufaw!” you say? well, that’s fine. i’m not here trying to convince you of some metaphysical position. i’m interested in pragmatics, so grant me a moment of epoché and listen! i’m going to tell you a practical way for how to fly—with your mind!

…or at least while you’re dreaming. you see, dreaming is the training ground for the real. whatever we can practice and perfect in our dreaming we can eventually manifest in our waking because the waking is the cosmic dream (we are like the dreamer who dreams and then lives inside the dream). but perhaps i’ve lost you. it doesn’t matter. you don’t need to believe in my proposition—just read this as the instructions for how to fly in your dreams. that’s the point, and that’s the practical implication. flying in your dreams is not only fun, but it’s been scientifically proven to improve your sex life!

method 1 – changing the direction of down

so how to fly in the dreaming? well, there are several ways which i would like to document for you, and what follows is the first method i’ve discovered. it’s an odd method that may seem convoluted at first, but it’s surprisingly effective, which has led me to consider it the lowest hanging fruit for dream flight. it’s called changing the direction of down. like when you were a kid, did you ever lie on the carpet and pretend you were playing tomb raider in your house, but everything was on its side and you had to walk along the walls and scramble up the couch to jump over pit traps. i used to play this all the time (because my brothers would hog the controller and never let me play the actual video game >:p). anyways, in dreaming, it’s like that. if you focus your mind onto pretending that down is now another direction it will suddenly shift to that direction. it’s actually surprisingly easy to do in a dream; you simply focus your intent to imagine gravity pulling you from a different direction and before you know it, you feel it pulling you from the new direction. and so, this becomes what i consider to be the easiest method to fly in the dreaming. all you have to do is realize you are dreaming and apply the method of changing the direction of down.

i would recommend trying to dream that you are in an outdoor environment and then try to find a tree. urban environments are not recommended because there are too many wires and sharp edges to get caught upon. try to find somewhere like a nice open park or meadow and go up to a nice sturdy tree. you can even practice this in waking life ahead of time as a way to prepare a prompt for your dream. then “sit” or “stand” sideways along the trunk of the tree. this is before you apply the method; you want a nice ledge to start from before you leap into the yonder or up into the zenith.

then you just kind of change the direction of down. i can’t describe the method itself in any other way than that because the method is just to do it. you are sitting there on the bough of a tree and suddenly think “down is over there now” thinking in the direction sideways—west or east or whatever it is—and then after intending that suddenly you are sitting on the bough of the tree like it was a bench and your legs are dangling over the yonder abyss.

the scary part is jumping off and letting yourself fall sideways; if you forget it’s a dream at this point you’ll be paralyzed with fear and be clinging to that tree for your life.

..but you just need to take a deep breath, cross your heart and take that jump of faith.

in a way it’s kind of cheating because you are more falling sideways rather than “flying,” but as you continue to fall you will notice that you can continuously change the direction of down to whatever direction you like, and so for all intents and purposes you are flying, or “fall-flying” perhaps. i would recommend changing the direction of down to go up as soon as possible because otherwise, you’re soon to hit something hard on the yonder. but once you get up into the open sky you will have a lot more room to roam and wander and practice falling about. over time you’ll even adapt to the method and you will gain this inexplicable control and you can then fly about intentionally like storm or superman. but at first it will be kind of wild and probably a bit frightening. it’s good to fall up where you have more room, but do be careful not to fall too high up. i once had this dream where i kept going up into space and the earth became smaller and smaller until it disappeared and i found myself lost in a terrifying void. instead, go up a ways and then try to fall sideways along and above the horizon. if you want to slow yourself down, a good way is to change directions from east to west, or whatever it is; it’s a little disorienting, but for a moment you float up to a complete stop before falling in the new direction.

of course it is possible to lose control and slam into a cliff face or back into the ground and die. but then you’ll just wake up and realize it was just a dream. <|;)

Greyfriar’s Isle is a comic about an island and the people who live there. A small family runs Marsh Light, a naturist campsite connected to the beach where locals and tourists spend their vacation time. The island is historically friendly to naturism, but not universally so. Also, there are ghosts and strange, eldritch island customs.

Greyfriar’s Isle is inspired by the comics I read in my youth, by the real-world island experiences I had in my youth, my ideas about what naturism should be and the stories naturists tell each other about themselves.

Diary of the Astro-Nudes

Inspired by 1960s nudist camp films like “Diary of a Nudist,” and sci-fi shows such as “My Favourite Martian,” Diary of the Astro-Nudes is the story of Ar and Arreya, two inter-dimensional explorers who come from a parallel Earth where clothes don’t exist. They crash-land into an Earth very much like ours circa 1950s, and, living there with a couple named Brad and Janet while they try to fix their ship, they examine our attitudes towards nudity and the human body.
