This week on Planet Nude

June begins with Pride Month, and several of this week’s stories arrived from places where queer history, public nudity, and community identity have become difficult to separate. Those connections were often built gradually, through years of use rather than formal recognition, which makes them easy to overlook until something threatens them.

In Seattle, the Denny Blaine trial entered a crucial phase as supporters continue defending a beach that has long served as both a nude recreation site and an important queer gathering place. Across the continent, advocates at Toronto’s Hanlan’s Point are entering Pride Month with a different concern. Severe erosion has swallowed large sections of one of North America’s most historically significant queer and clothing-optional beaches. The circumstances are different, but both stories point toward the same reality: communities are often only as secure as the spaces they can claim and maintain.

Elsewhere, the picture is more mixed. In Brazil’s Chapada dos Veadeiros, a new naturist pool and waterfall area is preparing to open inside an established ecotourism destination, creating fresh room for clothing-optional recreation.

At the same time, Full Tan Sun Club in upstate New York announced it will sit out the entire 2026 season for renovations. One story is about expansion, the other about preservation, but both reflect a reality familiar to naturists almost everywhere: spaces come and go, and maintaining them often requires far more work than creating them.

Curtis Atkins’ history of Arkansas nudism looks back at clubs and communities that once seemed permanent before gradually fading from the map. It's a useful reminder that nudist spaces rarely disappear all at once. More often they are lost through attrition, changing habits, and simple neglect. Preserving a community usually begins with showing up.

Publishers argue about it. This week, several of Planet Nude’s biggest stories all arrived at the same question from different directions: who gets to decide what the unclothed body means?

Denny Blaine is on the forefront again this week, as trial finally began in Seattle, opening what is expected to be a month-long proceeding over one of North America’s most closely watched nude beaches. Planet Nude has followed the story for years because the dispute increasingly feels larger than the beach itself. What began as a local conflict now reaches into constitutional claims, historical recordkeeping, expert testimony, queer heritage, and competing visions of public space. Like Hanlan’s Point before it, Denny Blaine is becoming a test of whether nude places are easier to defend when they are understood as cultural landmarks rather than simply places where nudity occurs.

A very different debate unfolded around Brett Marcella’s artist-led response to generative AI. The article struck a nerve with readers, drawing comments, messages, and disagreement from across the community. Beneath the immediate arguments about technology sits a deeper question about authenticity. Naturism has spent generations arguing that real bodies matter, real experiences matter, and real human presence matters. AI arrives directly on that fault line. Whether readers agree with the artists’ conclusions or not, the intensity of the response suggests this conversation is only getting started.

Questions of preservation surfaced elsewhere this week as H&E Naturist, the world’s longest-running naturist magazine, changed ownership and announced the end of its print edition. The move reflects economic realities facing niche publishing, but it also marks the close of a remarkable chapter in nudist media history. For more than a century, H&E has documented the movement’s arguments, aspirations, controversies, and contradictions. Its future now moves fully into the digital world alongside much of the media ecosystem that grew up around it.

Planet Nude has covered the Denny Blaine battles more consistently and in greater depth than perhaps any other naturist publication over the past three years, partly because the beach keeps revealing where older nudist politics no longer fully fit the moment. What began as a dispute over nudity at a small Seattle beach now stretches across constitutional expression, documented history, expert testimony, queer belonging, public safety, and the uneasy process of translating nude public culture into institutional language. A beach that existed largely outside formal structures is now being defended through court filings, historians, professional witnesses, and legal precedent.

What makes the case especially interesting is that much of this defense is not emerging from the traditional nudist-organizational playbook at all. Denny Blaine’s advocates have leaned heavily on queer history, cultural preservation, local identity, coalition politics, and civil-liberties framing in ways many legacy naturist groups historically avoided or underused. There are echoes here of Toronto’s Hanlan’s Point, where the beach’s LGBTQ+ significance gradually became inseparable from the argument for preserving nude space itself. That kind of cultural positioning may prove increasingly important as public nudity battles become harder to win through “harmless recreation” arguments alone. Whether traditional naturist organizations like the approach or not, they would probably be wise to pay attention. The movement may be watching a new advocacy model develop in real time.

Carl Hild’s history piece pulls the thread backward. If the familiar 1931 origin story of organized American nudism was built around Ilsley Boone, the newly translated material around Kurt Barthel suggests an earlier and more complicated beginning, possibly reaching back to 1925. Movements live partly through the stories they tell about their own birth, and American nudism’s institutional memory has always been selective, sometimes conveniently so. Pushing Barthel back into the frame does not settle the question of origins. It makes the question better.

Ronna Krozy’s essay on Apple’s expanding nudity-detection tools arrives at an uncomfortable moment for naturists already navigating increasingly automated forms of moderation and surveillance. Framed as safety features, the company’s systems still reinforce a blunt cultural assumption: the naked body is sensitive content unless proven otherwise. Technical classifications shape cultural habits over time. They teach users, parents, developers, and platforms what kind of body counts as risk. For nudists, that logic is deeply familiar. It is part of the same cultural machinery that keeps forcing public nudity to justify itself through legal defenses, historical records, and institutional language.

Skinny Dip Day organizers also stopped by recruiting teams for July 11, with a new promo video and a reminder that the event has raised more than $42,000 over the years while generating mainstream press for naturism.

Friday’s screening of Diary of a Nudist, Doris Wishman’s campy cult classic, drew a lively crowd for nudist-history trivia, live chat commentary, and a surprisingly great post-film discussion. More community screenings are definitely on the way.

Minnesota’s Supreme Court ruling on topfreedom was barely dry before Blaine moved to contain it. This week the city passed a new ordinance aimed squarely at undoing the practical effect of the decision, restoring restrictions through local code after losing ground at the state level. It’s a familiar cycle in nudist politics: a narrow legal victory followed by an administrative workaround. Rights can become negotiable again the moment they leave the courtroom.

Brighton’s World Naked Bike Ride ran into a different kind of vulnerability. Organizers postponed the event after a far-right demonstration and counterprotests were scheduled nearby the same day. Naked protest depends heavily on public atmosphere, and atmosphere is increasingly unstable. A very similar thing happened last year in Los Angeles. In Brighton, unlike what we say in Minnesota this week, the ride itself didn’t become illegal. The surrounding conditions simply became harder to navigate safely. Hopefully the postponement solves the problem.

Most of nudism’s public battles are defensive ones: protecting a beach, preserving a legal standard, preventing another rollback. But if naturism wants broader social acceptance rather than mere survival, it also needs an affirmative case for itself. That seems to be part of the thinking behind the INF-FNI and FFN’s new International Summer Naturist University in Paris. The conference is explicitly framed around naturism’s intellectual and philosophical foundations, with organizers arguing that the movement risks becoming little more than leisure culture without a stronger articulation of its underlying ideas. Whether readers agree with that diagnosis or not, the effort itself reflects something real. Naturism is increasingly trying to explain not only why nudity should remain legal, but why the movement exists in the first place.

Plus a new News of the Nude section at the bottom tracking stories from outside Planet Nude that we feel are worth your attention.

The new name just makes more sense. Nudism’s big stories tend to circle back around: the same beaches, the same legislative fights, the same questions about what the movement is for. Our work is ongoing. We’re not wrapping anything up because nothing has ended. We’re tracking what keeps circling. And we’re sharing what’s in our gravitational orbit at any given time. This week on Planet Nude

This week the stories we’re orbiting are mostly about land and access—which spaces exist, which are being threatened, and what it actually takes to create a new one from scratch.

The Kentucky story is easy to read as a cautionary tale about a group that got ahead of itself—declared a nude space without legal standing, invited media attention before building any coalition, and handed a hostile county government an easy win. That reading isn’t wrong. But the reason Bluegrass State Naturists exist at all is that Kentucky has essentially no lawful pathway for social nudism. They’re not picking a fight. They’re responding to an absence. Whether their strategy works is a separate question from whether the underlying problem is real.

The Brazil story runs parallel. Two beaches, two organizations, two different approaches to the same pressure. What links them is that neither is asking for anything radical—just honest engagement from public authorities with spaces that have existed for decades. That's a low bar. The fact that it requires sustained legal effort to clear it says something about where we actually are.

Denny Blaine is another. The beach has existed as an informal nude space for decades, but a wealthy neighborhood and a city government that won't commit have forced its defenders into court just for a seat at the table. This week a judge clarified what should have been obvious: topfreedom is legal there, even in the park's clothing-required zone. A win, but the kind that shouldn’t have required a lawsuit.

All of these stories share multiple common threads, but the most obvious to me is that the nudists are always the scrappy underdogs fighting for their space and for everyone’s rights.

Ohio's House Bill 249, the Indecent Exposure Modernization Act, passed the House in March by a 63-32 vote and now sits in the Senate Judiciary Committee, where it poses a concrete threat to body freedom advocates and naturists. The bill replaces the undefined term "private parts" with "private area," which explicitly includes the female breast below the areola, making toplessness a codified offense rather than a matter of legal ambiguity. Naturist clubs receive no exemption, and AANR has confirmed it is preparing to weigh in with the Senate Judiciary Committee directly before the legislative window closes.

For the first time in recent memory, AANR is giving its national convention an actual theme. On the grounds of Sky Farm, the oldest continuously operating nudist club in America, there sits a large steel wheel that most visitors walk past without recognizing. It is a Rhönrad, a century-old German gymnastic apparatus with deep roots in the FKK movement. Invented by Otto Feick in the 1920s and later performed at FKK gatherings and INF congresses across Europe, the wheel traveled west alongside the German immigrants who founded American nudism, carrying with it a tradition of physical culture the naturist movement has largely forgotten.

Launched in the fall of 2025, the Hiking without a stitch podcast has already grown into something more layered than its premise suggests. Over eleven episodes, Jonathan Norman has moved through the full terrain of naturism from conversations with his wife and his mom to looking at the legal and ethical landscape of nude hiking.

The results are in as the March raffle winners are announced, closing out the latest member drive with a look at who’s taking home the prizes. The update highlights the community participation behind the raffle and reinforces how these efforts help support and sustain Planet Nude’s ongoing work.

You may remember that about a year ago, we made a small change to how we publish comics on Strips, giving paid subscribers a week of early access before the comics unlocked for everyone. The intention was good: we wanted to offer something tangible to the readers who support us financially, and early access seemed like a reasonable way to do that.

After a year of watching how it actually works, we’ve decided to reverse the change.

Planet Nude's April Fools' post swapped its usual naturism content for a fully committed bit: a mock newsletter called News of the Noodle, presented as a monthly roundup of pasta developments. Complete with real and genuinely interesting noodle facts, the U.S.-Italy spaghetti tariff drama, the origins of cavatappi, Momofuku Ando's life story, and the farfalle family taxonomy, the joke works because it plays it completely straight, never winking at the reader, and the naturism-to-noodles pun ("body pastativity," "Planet Noodle") is baked in just enough to reward anyone paying attention.

This week, we shared essays looking at at first-time experiences going naked in public, and exploring fresh privacy questions raised by Meta smart glasses.
