This week on Planet Nude

Two of nudism’s long-running beach fights ended this week, and both ended in the beach’s favor. In Toronto, the federal government blocked an airport expansion that had threatened Hanlan’s Point, and named the beach specifically in a policy statement, an unusually direct move from a government body that typically prefers vague language when nudity enters the conversation.

In Maui, the planning commission approved a scaled-back state park project at Mākena after officials agreed to drop the new asphalt, cut the exterior lighting from six fixtures to one, and abandon any plan resembling the fencing that alarmed Little Beach regulars back in 2021. Neither fight is fully over. Ontario’s transportation minister says the province intends to keep pushing for the airport expansion regardless, and Maui’s commission has given the state until 2029 to produce the carrying capacity study that will shape what comes next.

Not every institutional story this week moved in nudism’s direction. Buffalo’s organizers canceled this year’s World Naked Bike Ride after receiving threats specific enough to name: projectiles, cars, and worse, born out of a social media pile-on that racked up roughly 500,000 engagements in 48 hours. It’s the ride’s first cancellation in eleven years, and the organizers’ own statement draws a useful distinction that gets lost in these controversies again and again, the one between nudity and the sexualized, criminalized version of it that critics keep insisting is the same thing.

That endurance shows up differently in this week’s Waypoints feature on Sunny Chinooks Camping Association, a club near Sundre, Alberta that has been chased off rented farmland, flooded off its own acreage, and evicted from a ranch it held for twenty-five years, and kept reconstituting itself anyway. More than seventy years on, members still drive out for summer camping and still gather for a winter swim in a rented Calgary pool. It’s a useful reminder that the institutional wins in Toronto and Maui didn’t happen on their own timeline. They happened because clubs and organizers kept showing up through decades when nobody in government was paying attention at all.

A resident’s complaint to a Sardinian mayor blurs public nudism together with indecent conduct and unauthorized filming, and asks for signage and stricter enforcement. The mayor’s response is notable mostly for what it declines to do: no new signage, no promise of surveillance, and a suggestion that people ought to simply behave respectfully toward each other. It’s a small story, but the conflation at its center, treating nudism and sexual misconduct as one complaint, is the same one Buffalo’s organizers were pushing back on this week.

Beach access had a strange week, the kind where a win and three separate threats arrive close enough together that they start to look like the same story told from different angles. A Seattle judge handed naturists a real, if narrow, victory: Denny Blaine Park stays open, and nudity stays legal there. The court drew a sharp line between nudity and lewd conduct, refusing to let bad behavior by a few become grounds for closing the beach to everyone. It is the kind of ruling advocates have been chasing for years, precise language that separates the body from the offense.

Everywhere else, the ground felt less stable. In San Mateo County, sixty years of tolerance at San Gregorio ended not through a court fight but through a change of ownership, as the ranch behind the beach becomes a state park and clothing becomes mandatory. No lawsuit, no dramatic villain, just a nonprofit land trust doing exactly what land trusts do, and a nude beach with civil-rights-era roots disappearing into a bureaucratic footnote.

In Toronto, Hanlan’s Point faces a more openly political threat, an airport expansion bill that lets the province seize land across the entire island chain without the usual expropriation safeguards. And at Bates Beach in Santa Barbara County, deputies interrupted this year’s Skinny Dip Day gathering, a reminder that even beaches with a long informal understanding can have that understanding revoked without warning.

What connects these stories is not that nudism is under siege in any coordinated sense. It is that the legal and cultural tolerance naturists depend on rarely comes from durable protection. It comes from precedent, private ownership, and municipal habit, all of which can shift without warning, especially if there are not steward groups there to fight for the privileges naturists often take for granted. Denny Blaine shows what it looks like when that tolerance gets codified—but that could have been a very different story if not for the tenacity of the “Friends of” group that sued their way into the lawsuit that sought to keep them out. San Gregorio, with no friends group, is lost without much of a murmur. Hanlan’s Point and Bates Beach both have steward groups, and those groups now have their work cut out for them.

Bryan Nix never called himself a nudist and this week’s tribute essay is careful not to claim otherwise on his behalf. What comes through instead is something more useful than a label: a habit of questioning norms without using that questioning as an excuse to be dishonest, of working inside institutions rather than torching them. It’s a personal piece, but it lands on the same instinct that runs through the rest of the week’s coverage, that the interesting story about naturism is rarely the nudity itself. It’s what people build around it, or fight to protect, or quietly inherit.

That instinct shows up again in our latest Waypoints: Koversada, which shared the story of how a swimming instructor from Munich talked a communist tourism board into building one of Europe’s first commercial naturist resorts, over the Church’s objections, on the strength of a signed contract. It’s a reminder that naturist spaces have always depended on somebody working the system rather than standing outside it, whether that system is a Yugoslav tourism ministry in 1960 or a Substack newsletter today.

Our interview with animator William Bradford covers similar ground from an entirely different angle. His short film about Vancouver’s World Naked Bike Ride spent two years on the festival circuit. The film is a playful look at the famous bike ride without making the riders the punchline. Rather, it’s a small case study in how naturism gets framed by outsiders, and Bradford’s insistence on keeping the humor pointed at the “thumpers” rather than the cyclists says something about what responsible coverage of this subject can look like—animated or otherwise.

Meanwhile in Mexico City, Día al Desnudo drew more than a thousand participants this year—sans bicycle—its largest turnout yet, moving from a Guadalajara body-acceptance initiative in 2022 into a genuine annual fixture with yoga sessions, a nude café, and a peaceful march past a national landmark. It’s the kind of institutional growth that’s easy to miss if you’re only watching the beaches and legal fights. But we’ve been covering it on Planet Nude since the beginning.

The rest of our editorial week belonged to Skinny Dip Day, which was celebrated around the world today. One of the pleasures of publishing every day is that stories sometimes begin talking to one another without planning to. This week, they converged on a simple question: who gets to define naturism, its history, and its place in public life?

The biggest news came from Arizona, where Governor Katie Hobbs vetoed HB 2133, the AI deepfake bill that AANR had spent months opposing. Naturists objected to the proposal because its broad recordkeeping requirements risked sweeping lawful nude publishing into legislation aimed at revenge porn. Hobbs vetoed it for a different reason entirely, arguing it threatened political free speech. Different objections, same outcome. Sometimes a bill can be too broad in more than one direction.

Just a few days earlier, Bogotá offered a glimpse of what happens when the law draws a much clearer line. More than 300 people gathered nude in Plaza de Bolívar, the symbolic heart of Colombia’s government, under a Constitutional Court ruling that explicitly separates simple nudity from indecent conduct. The event would have been remarkable almost anywhere. Held outside Congress, the Supreme Court, and City Hall, it also became a reminder that legal certainty shapes public culture as much as public opinion does.

Curtis Atkins’ essay on the Nudist Hall of Fame turned the lens inward. Halls of fame are supposed to settle history, but they also reveal who gets remembered, who gets forgotten, and what institutions choose to overlook. Atkins revisits founders who later rejected organized nudism, influential figures whose lives resist easy celebration, and the uncomfortable truth that preserving history sometimes means preserving its contradictions as well. If the movement wants an honest record of itself, it has to be willing to keep the difficult chapters alongside the inspiring ones.

Every nudist has a place they recommend. Ask where to go, and they’ll tell you about their favorite beach, club, or hot spring. But if you want to know how one of those spots came to be or what its history looks like, the answers often get much thinner.

That gap is what inspired Waypoints, Planet Nude’s new series exploring the places that make up the geography of naturism. Finding directions is easy. Finding out who fought for a beach, how a club survived, or why a place exists at all is much harder. The first installment visits Hippie Hollow, the only legally recognized clothing-optional public park in Texas, where decades of public access ultimately depended on a handful of local political decisions and the people willing to defend them. Places like Hippie Hollow don’t survive on reputation alone.

Curtis Atkins’ history of Gay Naturists International tells a similar story from a different perspective. Places aren’t the only things whose histories fade. For much of the twentieth century, mainstream organized nudism defined itself through the traditional family, leaving many gay naturists to build institutions of their own. GNI became one of the movement’s most influential organizations, but its story has rarely been told in full. Atkins traces that history from the hidden beaches and informal gatherings before Stonewall to an international organization that gave thousands of gay men a place where they no longer had to leave part of themselves at the gate.

The week also brought a few reminders that today’s institutions eventually become tomorrow’s history. AANR members returned Linda Weber to the presidency for a second term, while this month’s News of the Nude continues documenting a movement that never stands idly by, from beaches under pressure to clubs adapting, expanding, or pushing back against external heat.

Taken together, this week’s stories paint the picture that naturism inherits more than places. It inherits the people who kept them alive, and the responsibility to remember how they got here. The work of building naturist spaces and the work of preserving their histories tend to fall to the same people

Three nude spaces are in different kinds of motion this week, each in different phases on the spectrum between threat and renewal—and together they paint a unique picture of a movement in motion.

The most urgent is of the three is Mākena in Hawaii. A Maui Planning Commission hearing scheduled for June 23 will consider a Special Management Area permit for state park improvements the DLNR has framed as routine: better bathrooms, outdoor showers, expanded parking. Little Beach—the clothing-optional cove that has operated for more than five decades on informal tolerance, (not formal designation)—lies downstream of whatever decisions emerge from this process.

In Georgia, the long-open question of what would become of Serendipity Park has an answer. A California couple—Tanya Parker and Roger Johnson, both veterans of Southern California organized nudism—closed on the purchase June 8 and have rebranded it Serendipity Sun Club & RV Park. They’ve committed publicly to keeping it a family nudist resort, and that commitment is reinforced by something stronger than goodwill: a deed restriction written into the sale requiring nudist operation for at least 10 years. When nudist resorts in the South change hands, they have a history of not staying nudist. Serendipity’s sale was structured, smartly, against that outcome.

And on Saint Martin in the Caribbean, the longest wait in recent naturist memory may finally be ending. Ground has broken at the former Club Orient site, nearly nine years after Hurricane Irma destroyed the resort. The new project—La Griselle, though the name isn’t yet finalized—is planned as a five-star naturist hotel, backed by a €41 million commitment and a 60-year lease on public land. It’s a different kind of place. But it’s a place, and a place is a win.

Barbara Minney’s essay this week belongs in a different register but isn’t disconnected from these questions of access and belonging. This week brought three very different attempts to solve problems involving nudity. A Seattle courtroom considered the future of Denny Blaine Beach. British officials proposed software that would block nude images by default on children's devices. Arizona lawmakers advanced a bill intended to address deepfakes and revenge porn. Each begins with a seemingly-legitimate concern. Each also raises questions about what gets swept up when nudity itself becomes the thing being regulated.

Britain’s proposed device-level nudity detection is the most literal version of that problem. The goal is framed as child protection, and the harms it invokes are real. But the proposed mechanism depends on treating “nude images” as a category a device can recognize before any human meaning enters the picture. For naturists, that is the familiar mistake in its purest technical form: a body becomes a warning label first, and only later does anyone ask what the image actually was.

Arizona’s HB 2133 raises a related problem through law rather than software. A bill aimed at deepfakes and nonconsensual sexual imagery now sits on Governor Katie Hobbs’s desk, with AANR urging a veto over concerns that broadly written obligations could sweep lawful nude publishing into a compliance regime built for something else. The pattern is getting hard to miss. Bad actors create a real crisis, lawmakers reach for broad categories, and nonsexual nudity gets dragged into the net.

At Denny Blaine, the question is moving toward judgment. Closing arguments arrived this week in a case that has increasingly asked whether an informal nude beach can be understood as a legitimate public space with history, community, and civic meaning. The plaintiff has tried to frame the park as a nuisance. Friends of Denny Blaine has answered with continuity, culture, safety data, queer belonging, and the basic point that simple nudity remains lawful. That contrast matters. Institutions often recognize a place only after a community learns how to translate itself into institutional language.

June begins with Pride Month, and several of this week’s stories arrived from places where queer history, public nudity, and community identity have become difficult to separate. Those connections were often built gradually, through years of use rather than formal recognition, which makes them easy to overlook until something threatens them.

In Seattle, the Denny Blaine trial entered a crucial phase as supporters continue defending a beach that has long served as both a nude recreation site and an important queer gathering place. Across the continent, advocates at Toronto’s Hanlan’s Point are entering Pride Month with a different concern. Severe erosion has swallowed large sections of one of North America’s most historically significant queer and clothing-optional beaches. The circumstances are different, but both stories point toward the same reality: communities are often only as secure as the spaces they can claim and maintain.

Elsewhere, the picture is more mixed. In Brazil’s Chapada dos Veadeiros, a new naturist pool and waterfall area is preparing to open inside an established ecotourism destination, creating fresh room for clothing-optional recreation.

At the same time, Full Tan Sun Club in upstate New York announced it will sit out the entire 2026 season for renovations. One story is about expansion, the other about preservation, but both reflect a reality familiar to naturists almost everywhere: spaces come and go, and maintaining them often requires far more work than creating them.

Curtis Atkins’ history of Arkansas nudism looks back at clubs and communities that once seemed permanent before gradually fading from the map. It's a useful reminder that nudist spaces rarely disappear all at once. More often they are lost through attrition, changing habits, and simple neglect. Preserving a community usually begins with showing up.

Planet Nude has covered the Denny Blaine battles more consistently and in greater depth than perhaps any other naturist publication over the past three years, partly because the beach keeps revealing where older nudist politics no longer fully fit the moment. What began as a dispute over nudity at a small Seattle beach now stretches across constitutional expression, documented history, expert testimony, queer belonging, public safety, and the uneasy process of translating nude public culture into institutional language. A beach that existed largely outside formal structures is now being defended through court filings, historians, professional witnesses, and legal precedent.

What makes the case especially interesting is that much of this defense is not emerging from the traditional nudist-organizational playbook at all. Denny Blaine’s advocates have leaned heavily on queer history, cultural preservation, local identity, coalition politics, and civil-liberties framing in ways many legacy naturist groups historically avoided or underused. There are echoes here of Toronto’s Hanlan’s Point, where the beach’s LGBTQ+ significance gradually became inseparable from the argument for preserving nude space itself. That kind of cultural positioning may prove increasingly important as public nudity battles become harder to win through “harmless recreation” arguments alone. Whether traditional naturist organizations like the approach or not, they would probably be wise to pay attention. The movement may be watching a new advocacy model develop in real time.

Carl Hild’s history piece pulls the thread backward. If the familiar 1931 origin story of organized American nudism was built around Ilsley Boone, the newly translated material around Kurt Barthel suggests an earlier and more complicated beginning, possibly reaching back to 1925. Movements live partly through the stories they tell about their own birth, and American nudism’s institutional memory has always been selective, sometimes conveniently so. Pushing Barthel back into the frame does not settle the question of origins. It makes the question better.

Ronna Krozy’s essay on Apple’s expanding nudity-detection tools arrives at an uncomfortable moment for naturists already navigating increasingly automated forms of moderation and surveillance. Framed as safety features, the company’s systems still reinforce a blunt cultural assumption: the naked body is sensitive content unless proven otherwise. Technical classifications shape cultural habits over time. They teach users, parents, developers, and platforms what kind of body counts as risk. For nudists, that logic is deeply familiar. It is part of the same cultural machinery that keeps forcing public nudity to justify itself through legal defenses, historical records, and institutional language.

Minnesota’s Supreme Court ruling on topfreedom was barely dry before Blaine moved to contain it. This week the city passed a new ordinance aimed squarely at undoing the practical effect of the decision, restoring restrictions through local code after losing ground at the state level. It’s a familiar cycle in nudist politics: a narrow legal victory followed by an administrative workaround. Rights can become negotiable again the moment they leave the courtroom.

Brighton’s World Naked Bike Ride ran into a different kind of vulnerability. Organizers postponed the event after a far-right demonstration and counterprotests were scheduled nearby the same day. Naked protest depends heavily on public atmosphere, and atmosphere is increasingly unstable. A very similar thing happened last year in Los Angeles. In Brighton, unlike what we say in Minnesota this week, the ride itself didn’t become illegal. The surrounding conditions simply became harder to navigate safely. Hopefully the postponement solves the problem.

Most of nudism’s public battles are defensive ones: protecting a beach, preserving a legal standard, preventing another rollback. But if naturism wants broader social acceptance rather than mere survival, it also needs an affirmative case for itself. That seems to be part of the thinking behind the INF-FNI and FFN’s new International Summer Naturist University in Paris. The conference is explicitly framed around naturism’s intellectual and philosophical foundations, with organizers arguing that the movement risks becoming little more than leisure culture without a stronger articulation of its underlying ideas. Whether readers agree with that diagnosis or not, the effort itself reflects something real. Naturism is increasingly trying to explain not only why nudity should remain legal, but why the movement exists in the first place.

This week on Planet Nude

This week the stories we’re orbiting are mostly about land and access—which spaces exist, which are being threatened, and what it actually takes to create a new one from scratch.

The Kentucky story is easy to read as a cautionary tale about a group that got ahead of itself—declared a nude space without legal standing, invited media attention before building any coalition, and handed a hostile county government an easy win. That reading isn’t wrong. But the reason Bluegrass State Naturists exist at all is that Kentucky has essentially no lawful pathway for social nudism. They’re not picking a fight. They’re responding to an absence. Whether their strategy works is a separate question from whether the underlying problem is real.

The Brazil story runs parallel. Two beaches, two organizations, two different approaches to the same pressure. What links them is that neither is asking for anything radical—just honest engagement from public authorities with spaces that have existed for decades. That's a low bar. The fact that it requires sustained legal effort to clear it says something about where we actually are.

Denny Blaine is another. The beach has existed as an informal nude space for decades, but a wealthy neighborhood and a city government that won't commit have forced its defenders into court just for a seat at the table. This week a judge clarified what should have been obvious: topfreedom is legal there, even in the park's clothing-required zone. A win, but the kind that shouldn’t have required a lawsuit.

All of these stories share multiple common threads, but the most obvious to me is that the nudists are always the scrappy underdogs fighting for their space and for everyone’s rights.

Also, AANR ballots are out this week with a genuinely contested presidential race that could shape how the organization responds when legislation comes for your beach or your club. Ohio's House Bill 249, the Indecent Exposure Modernization Act, passed the House in March by a 63-32 vote and now sits in the Senate Judiciary Committee, where it poses a concrete threat to body freedom advocates and naturists. The bill replaces the undefined term "private parts" with "private area," which explicitly includes the female breast below the areola, making toplessness a codified offense rather than a matter of legal ambiguity. Naturist clubs receive no exemption, and AANR has confirmed it is preparing to weigh in with the Senate Judiciary Committee directly before the legislative window closes.

On the grounds of Sky Farm, the oldest continuously operating nudist club in America, there sits a large steel wheel that most visitors walk past without recognizing. It is a Rhönrad, a century-old German gymnastic apparatus with deep roots in the FKK movement. Invented by Otto Feick in the 1920s and later performed at FKK gatherings and INF congresses across Europe, the wheel traveled west alongside the German immigrants who founded American nudism, carrying with it a tradition of physical culture the naturist movement has largely forgotten.

Launched in the fall of 2025, the Hiking without a stitch podcast has already grown into something more layered than its premise suggests. Over eleven episodes, Jonathan Norman has moved through the full terrain of naturism from conversations with his wife and his mom to looking at the legal and ethical landscape of nude hiking.

The results are in as the March raffle winners are announced, closing out the latest member drive with a look at who’s taking home the prizes. The update highlights the community participation behind the raffle and reinforces how these efforts help support and sustain Planet Nude’s ongoing work.

You may remember that about a year ago, we made a small change to how we publish comics on Strips, giving paid subscribers a week of early access before the comics unlocked for everyone. The intention was good: we wanted to offer something tangible to the readers who support us financially, and early access seemed like a reasonable way to do that.

After a year of watching how it actually works, we’ve decided to reverse the change.

Planet Nude's April Fools' post swapped its usual naturism content for a fully committed bit: a mock newsletter called News of the Noodle, presented as a monthly roundup of pasta developments. Complete with real and genuinely interesting noodle facts, the U.S.-Italy spaghetti tariff drama, the origins of cavatappi, Momofuku Ando's life story, and the farfalle family taxonomy, the joke works because it plays it completely straight, never winking at the reader, and the naturism-to-noodles pun ("body pastativity," "Planet Noodle") is baked in just enough to reward anyone paying attention.
